Josephine Russing owns 387 pairs of gloves. She’s given a new pair
every week by her father, a sullen man known best for his insistence that
the citizens in town wear gloves at all times. A world away, the children
of Gulm have been taken. No one knows where they might be, except the
mysterious and terrifying leader of the land: The Master. He rules with an
iron fist, using two grotesque creatures to enforce his terrible reign.
When a peculiar boy named Fargus shows up on Josephine’s property and then
disappears soon afterward, she follows him without a second thought and
finds herself magically transported to Gulm. After Fargus introduces her to
his tough-as-nails friend Ide, the three of them set off on an adventure
that will test everything Josephine has ever thought about the rules of the
universe, leading to a revelation about the truth of the land of Gulm, and
of Josephine’s own life back home. Join us today to welcome author Carolyn
Cohagan and get a copy of her delightful and mysterious debut novel for
kids, The Lost Children. Today at 1:00PM.

Hugo-winner Dan Simmons became a staff favorite with The Terror and
Drood, and he’s back with another thriller, Black Hills. The novel is at
once a historical fiction and a sci fi novel, which is not that easy to do
well, but Simmons once again delivers a novel full of suspense and
complexities that keep you reading long into the night. As General Custer
lies dying on the battlefield, his ghost enters the body of Paha Sapa, a
young Sioux warrior. Custer’s ghost speaks to Paha Sapa for the rest of his
life, and Simmons takes us through the American West with these two
diverging characters. BookPeople highly recommends this event, tonight at
7PM.

BookPeople loves Dave Eggers! Not only has he written and edited
some amazing books, but he is the founder and editor of McSweeney’s
publishing house. He also started 826 Valencia, a non-profit writing and
tutoring center for kids that has been adopted across the country. Eggers
will be at BookPeople tonight to talk about and read from his latest books,
The Wild Things and Zeitoun. The Wild Things is based on Maurice Sendak’s
Where the Wild Things Are, and Eggers also wrote the screenplay for the
recent movie. Zeitoun is the true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun in the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Kicking off the event today will be Austin
resident (and former BookPerson) Bill Cotter reading from his recently
published McSweeney’s book Fever Chart. A jam-packed event full of great
books!
Wristbands for the signing line will go out starting at 4PM. To get
a wristband, you must have a copy of Zeitoun or The Wild Things purchased
from BookPeople.

In 2004, Stephanie Saldaña traveled to Damascus, Syria, on a
Fulbright fellowship to study the Muslim Jesus. She was also fleeing a
broken heart. It was not an ideal time to be an American in the Middle East,
so she traveled to an ancient Christian monastery carved into the desert
cliffs. In that beautiful, austere setting, she confronted her wavering
faith and met Frederic, a young French novice monk. As they set out to
explore the mysteries entwining Christianity and Islam, Stephanie slowly
realized that she had found God again – and that she was in love with
Frederic. A romantic and sweeping memoir, tonight at 7PM.
