OFF SITE: CYNTHIA LEVINSON - We've Got a Job *Release Party*
| Middle Grade Author BookPeople will be on hand at the Carver Museum |
Join us this afternoon when we celebrate the release of Austin author and SCBWI member Cynthia Levinson's wonderful new book for middle-grade readers that highlights a fascinating piece of American history. Between May 2 and May 7, 1963, 3,000-4,000 children–yes, children–marched to protest segregation and to get arrested and jailed in Birmingham, Alabama. Many of them were charged by snarling police dogs and washed down the street by powerful fire hoses. Nevertheless, day after day, more of them marched and went to jail. Why? Meet the marchers who tell their stories in We’ve Got a Job. Through the eyes of these protesters and others who participated, We've Got a Job tells this little-known story. The children succeeded - where adults had failed - in desegregating one of the most racially violent cities in America. Cynthia Levinson interviewed dozens of participants in the Birmingham Children's March and spent four years researching and writing We've Got a Job to share their stories. A former teacher and educational policy consultant and researcher, she has also published articles in Appleseeds, Calliope, Dig, Faces, and Odyssey. She divides her time between Texas and Massachusetts. The Carver Museum is located at: In order to have anything signed at a BookPeople event, a copy of the event book must be purchased from BookPeople.
