Join us for a celebration of two of Austin's unique neighborhoods!

SUZANNE DEADRICK
will present Austin's Pemberton Heights.

JANE RIVERA & GILBERTO RIVERA
will present Austin's Rosewood Neighborhood.

One of the first automobile suburbs in Austin, Pemberton Heights was developed from former plantation land on a limestone bluff overlooking the city. Neighborhood development began in 1927 with a castle created from an old water tower, which originally served as the land office, and encompasses diverse architectural styles, such as Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Monterrey Revival, and Art Moderne. Many homes were designed by leading architects of the day. The neighborhood showcases a mixture of straight and curving streets; magnificent large homes; and cozy bungalows on what was once farmland. Authors Elizabeth A. Cash and Suzanne B. Deaderick have selected the best images from the Austin History Center and added photographs generously provided by longtime Austinites, Pemberton Heights residents, and others with an interest in sharing the story of this historic neighborhood.

Rosewood is a historically African American neighborhood on the east side of Austin. It takes its name from Rosewood Avenue, which runs through the heart of the area. Rosewood was first settled by Europeans in the late 19th century, and beginning in the 1910s, the City of Austin adopted as official policy the goal of segregating African Americans in East Austin. Authors Jane H. Rivera, PhD, and Gilberto C. Rivera have been neighborhood activists in Rosewood for decades. They have added images and interview materials from their neighbors and images and information from the Austin History Center to document the transformation of Rosewood. Gilberto C. Rivera, a Rosewood native, has selected the best photographs from his personal collection to form the basis for Images of America: Austin’s Rosewood Neighborhood.

How Our Events Work

BookPeople is proud to host over 300 events every year. Our events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.

To get a book signed at one of our events, a copy of the event book must be purchased from BookPeople. By purchasing a book from BookPeople, you are not only supporting a local, independent business, but you are also showing publishers that they should continue sending authors to BookPeople. Think of it this way: you wouldn't bring your own beer to a bar, would you?

For events where we anticipate large crowds, wristbands may be required in order to join the signing line. Occasionally we may also ticket events. In both cases, information as to when wristbands/tickets are available will be found on that event's specific page on our website.
