How Our Events Work

BookPeople is proud to host over 300 events every year. Our events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.

To get a book signed at one of our events, a copy of the event book must be purchased from BookPeople. By purchasing a book from BookPeople, you are not only supporting a local, independent business, but you are also showing publishers that they should continue sending authors to BookPeople. Think of it this way: you wouldn't bring your own beer to a bar, would you?

For events where we anticipate large crowds, wristbands may be required in order to join the signing line. Occasionally we may also ticket events. In both cases, information as to when wristbands/tickets are available will be found on that event's specific page on our website.

will speak & sign
You're Not Doing It Right:
Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death
and Other Humiliations.

Wristbands for the signing portion of this event will go out at 6p on 3/5 and are available with the purchase of a copy of You're Not Doing It Right from BookPeople.

If you attended Black's show at the Alamo on 3/4 and received a book with your ticket, you are welcome to come to Black's BookPeople event and get your book signed. Show us your Alamo ticket and we'll give you a wristband.

Austin, make it your beeswax to be here tonight when writer, comedian, and actor Michael Ian Black is at BookPeople with his new funny (and totally true) collection of essays.

As a husband and father living in the suburbs, Michael asks the question so many of us ask ourselves at one point or another: How did I end up here? (And also: If Fat Kevin Federline succumbs to his own wasted potential, what does that mean for the rest of us?) Darkly humorous and told with raw honesty, Michael takes on his childhood, his marriage, his children, and his career with unexpected candor and deadpan wit. Stories include: How his lesbian feminist mother raised him to be a tough but sensitive New Seventies Man like Alan Alda; how his camp girlfriend dumped him for a guy nicknamed Taco; how he backed into marrying his wife by breaking up with her first; how he is completely undone by hearing a Creed song on the radio on the eve of becoming a father; and how he learned to use Santa Claus as a “Bad Cop” threat to control his kids year round.

Michael Ian Black is a writer, comedian, and actor who has created and starred in many television series including Michael and Michael Have Issues, Stella, and The State. He also starred in the NBC television show Ed and on Vh1's I Love The... series. He wrote the screenplay for the film Run, Fatboy, Run and wrote and directed the film Wedding Daze. Michael regularly tours the country as a stand-up comedian, and is the bestselling author of the book My Custom Van (and 50 Other Mind-Blowing Essays That Will Blow Your Mind All Over Your Face) and the children's books Chicken Cheeks, The Purple Kangaroo, A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea, and the forthcoming I'm Bored. Michael lives in Connecticut with his wife and two children.

In order to have anything signed at a BookPeople event, a copy of the event book must be purchased from BookPeople. If you purchase your book from BookPeople in advance of the event, please save your receipt and present it at the event.

Thank you for supporting Michael Ian Black, and your local independent bookstore!
