How Our Events Work

BookPeople is proud to host over 300 events every year. Our events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.

To get a book signed at one of our events, a copy of the event book must be purchased from BookPeople. By purchasing a book from BookPeople, you are not only supporting a local, independent business, but you are also showing publishers that they should continue sending authors to BookPeople. Think of it this way: you wouldn't bring your own beer to a bar, would you?

For events where we anticipate large crowds, wristbands may be required in order to join the signing line. Occasionally we may also ticket events. In both cases, information as to when wristbands/tickets are available will be found on that event's specific page on our website.

Writers' League of Texas: Get Real - The Art of Researching & Writing Nonfiction

  • Adult Event
03/15/2012 7:00 pm

The Writers' League presents a yearlong series called “The Write of Way,” in which authors and publishing professionals explore various elements of the writer’s life ranging from inspiration to perspiration, time management to research, and drafting to publishing. “The Write of Way” is for anyone who considers him or herself a writer – or even just an avid reader who is curious about the process!

This month's topic of conversation is Get Real: The Art of Researching and Writing Nonfiction. Panelists include:

M. William Phelps - Author of Never See Them Again.

Donna Johnson is a high school dropout who found redemption in books and the University of Texas. She planned to be a journalist, but her career was hijacked by marketing and advertising. As a result, she spent years writing about the mysterious workings of technology, most of which she took on faith. She created, wrote, and produced a radio show called Tech Ranch which said everything that could be said about technology and culture in one minute, five days a week, for too many years. She is the author of the highly acclaimed memoir Holy Ghost Girl (Gotham, 2011).

Stephen Harrigan is the author of eight books of fiction and non-fiction, including the novels Challenger Park and The Gates of the Alamo.  He is also a longtime writer for Texas Monthly and other magazines and an award-winning screenwriter who has written many movies for television. His latest novel, Remember Ben Clayton, was published in May 2011 by Alfred A. Knopf.

Cynthia Levinson -- A reformed educational consultant, Cynthia Levinson has been writing nonfiction for children for five years. Her articles for COBBLESTONE, FACES, DIG, and other magazines explain how to make tattoos from dead larvae, avoid the next pandemic, and figure out if you’re really you. Her debut nonfiction middle-grade book, We’ve Got a Job: The 1963 Birmingham Children’s March (Peachtree, 2012), received three starred reviews.
