The old saying warns us not to judge a book by its cover. And yet ... how many times do we find ourselves compelled to pick up and peruse a book based solely on how it looks?
A good design can attract readers, convey an overriding theme and tone of the book, and establish brand. It can even make the act of reading more satisfying and less eye-straining. But what are the "rules" of such design? What needs to be considered when contructing the look of a particular book?

Tamara Dever is the founder of TLC Graphics, an award-winning book design and production firm providing customized support to authors and small publishers with big dreams. For 20 years, this premier team has been taking manuscripts through editorial, design, printing, and beyond to create beautiful, salable books. They are dedicated to bringing to fruition the passion of each client. Tamara mentors aspiring designers, writes articles, and presents classes on book design and self-publishing. Sheila Parr is an award-winning book designer and art director. She spent over ten years in-house at Greenleaf Book Group, overseeing the creative work of the design department and working closely with the sales team. She has designed more than 100 books of various genres, and provided creative direction on countless more. She now does her own thing as a freelance book designer, regularly consulting with authors on industry design standards while navigating the toy-strewn landscape that results from sharing a space with a toddler and an infant.
Kathy Sargent is a published author of historical fiction and a book designer. Under the pen name, Anna K. Sargent, she writes historical fiction set in Texas. Her first novel, The Legend of Juan Miguel, was a bestseller on Amazon.com and the sequel, The Passion of Juan Miguel, was published earlier this year. After Kathy designed and formatted her own books and ebooks, she began doing the same for other authors. DJ Stout is one of twenty-one partners of Pentagram, a renowned design firm with offices in London, New York, San Francisco, Berlin and Austin. He studied graphic design at Texas Tech University and began his career in 1981, working for Robert A. Wilson Associates in Dallas. In 1987, he moved to Austin, where he was the art director of Texas Monthly magazine for thirteen years. In 2010 DJ was the recipient of the prestigious Richard Gangel Award, a lifetime achievement designation from the Society of Illustrators. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the author of two books. DJ’s design retrospective Variations on a Rectangle will be published this fall by the University of Texas Press.
