I read The Giver
when I was in sixth grade. To this day it’s one of my favorite required
readings. The creativity of her story and the way it unfolds was so
novel to me at the time. It’s affected my view of “excellent writing”
ever since then. It was a mind-blowing book for me. It had such a large
impact as far as showing me the power of creative writing and what
storytelling can do.

"It hit me straight in the heart and is a wake up call for the soul. I
can imagine that reading it as a child can greatly influence one’s
worldview. That’s a beautiful thing – books SHOULD influence people,
especially when they are as thoughtful and thought-provoking as The Giver."

Description

Lois Lowry's "The Giver" is the quintessential dystopian novel, followed by its remarkable companions, "Gathering Blue," "Messenge"r, and "Son."
Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Praise For…
