"TRISTAN STRONG PUNCHES A HOLE IN THE SKY was one of my favorite books of 2019. Mbalia's world-building and storytelling are absolutely incredible, a feat he has continued in the sequel! Tristan Strong is an immensely likable character--he's got a great sense of humor, is an mostly selfless and thoughtful problem-solver, and his frustrations with the expectations authority figures in his life put on him are highly relatable. And, because Tristan is a storyteller, Mbalia has a lot of fun occasionally breaking the fourth wall with the young anansesem's playful commentary. The sequel dives back into Alke, the land of stories brought to life--Tristan’s friends are back, more gods are introduced, and Anansi’s magic is interwoven with modern technology in really fun ways. In the sequel however, Tristan is handling the consequences of his heroics from the first book. I really love that these books handle tragedy and trauma with sensitivity, and explore the many facets an action (intended or otherwise) can have. Justice is also handled thoughtfully, with the scales tipping heavily towards redemption over punishment. Overall, the first book presented a complete story arc that left you wanting more--and TRISTAN STRONG DESTROYS THE WORLD provides! I can’t wait for the next installation in Tristan’s story!"— Tomoko
Tristan Strong, just back from a victorious but exhausting adventure in Alke, the land of African American folk heroes and African gods, is suffering from PTSD. But there's no rest for the weary when his grandmother is abducted.
