"Of the types of memory that stick with us I think one of the most overlooked but most powerful one is what we eat. Food! We all have memories that are deeply triggered by food. And tied up in that are the food memories we associate with loved ones. Especially parents. An interesting conversation always comes out of asking about these sorts of food memories. Weirdly enough one of the strongest ones I have is Tostadas. I was always so happy when my mom would make them and I miss them. I've had many a tostada and none compare to my Moms but they always make me think of her so I order them when I am feeling homesick. This is a book about a lot of things, and honestly a lot of big things. It's about Love, Death, Sickness, Mourning, Distance. Lots of capitalized words that we all stagger under the weight of. But its also about food and how it can be used to feel closer to the memories we don't want to lose about the people we never want to forget. It can help you cross cultural bridges and connect with your heritage and it can help you release your emotions. Sometimes you just have to cry at the grocery store. This is a beautiful read and I recommend two things: Read this book and think about your own food memories. For fans of food as well as folks missing someone important."
