Luckenbach Texas: The Center of the Universe
ABOUT LUCKENBACH TEXAS
Luckenbach Texas - The Center of The Universe with a foreword by John Phillip Santos, tells the untold story about the inventors, imagineers, music makers and peacemakers—all of them revolutionaries with unstoppable imaginations and fiercely independent spirits who made up the colorful, vibrant fabric of Luckenbach, the biggest little town in Texas. The book covers in colorful detail the years Becky Patterson’s father Hondo Crouch bought the property and turned it into a historic music venue in the 1970’s, the town’s German-Texas history of intellectual creativity, the Civil War tragedies it experienced and how Luckenbach—with the help of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker and Gary P. Nunn and a handful of Hondo’s poet songwriter friends—was a scene that gave rise to Texas Outlaw music of the 1970s.
Luckenbach, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, was first established in 1849 by the German ‘’Freethinker” immigrants. It consisted of twelve acres on Grape Creek, with one main building which housed the post office/general store/bar and a dance hall, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, egg house and two outhouses. Hondo Crouch and his partner bought Luckenbach in 1970 and reinvented it, calling himself an ”Imagineer” and became known as the “Clown Prince” and “Mayor” of Luckenbach. He staged many unconventional events that drew large crowds from all over including Women’s Only Chili Bust, Return of the Mud Dauber, Great World’s Fairs and also held a “picker’s circle” in 2009 that broke the Guinness World Record for the most guitar players gathered at one time to play continuously for five minutes with 1,918 guitar players! In 1973, Hondo’s friend Jerry Jeff Walker came and lit the fire of Texas outlaw music by recording ¡Viva Terlingua! along with two other albums in Luckenbach’s primitive setting. Luckenbach also hosted five of Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnics, transforming this small town’s field into a larger than life venue.
ABOUT BECKY CROUCH PATTERSON
Becky Crouch Patterson, a fifth generation Texan, was an eye-witness to the colorful Seventies when her father Hondo Crouch reinvented the 1849 town and where the finest songwriters gave rise to Texas Outlaw Music. Becky was co-owner of Luckenbach for twenty-four years during which she wrote a column for the Luckenbach Moon, “Everybody’s Somebody”. Currently, Luckenbach is under the ownership of Becky’s son, Kit Patterson and her sister, Cris Crouch Graham. Pride in her Hill Country led her to write two previous memoirs which became Texana best-sellers, Hondo, My Father and her most recent book, The Ranch That Was Us with a forward by Willie Nelson. Illustrated with fifty of her paintings, The Ranch That Was Us was required reading for the James Michener School of Creative Writing at The University of Texas. Whether writing, painting, designing hats, boots, western clothing, or making appliqued tapestries or furnishings for churches, her style always pays homage to her Texas roots, history and lifestyle.
Becky was a cum laude Fine Arts student at the University of Texas and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Becky has been recognized for her work with awards including San Antonio Express News Artist of the Year, Outstanding Women of America, and the Comfort Heritage Foundation Award. Becky was raised on her parents’ ranch not far from Luckenbach and lives on the 130-year-old Stieler Home Ranch headquarters in Comfort, Texas.
