BookPeople presents
with authors
Kat Shepherd and Nikki Loftin

Writing workshop & activities geared toward families and kids ages 8-12 to celebrate all things spooky!

Being scared can be exciting: your heart races as you shriek in terror at the monster on the screen, and then you feel that huge rush of relief when you realize that you’re finally safe. But sometimes being scared isn’t any fun at all. The creepy movie that you know is fiction, but you can’t stop thinking about when it’s time for bed. That spooky story you heard that someone swears is true. That nightmare that you just can’t shake.

And that’s where writing comes in. One of the best parts about writing a scary story is that you control the ending. You create the monsters, and only you know how to defeat them. In this writing workshop, middle grade horror authors Nikki Loftin and Kat Shepherd will celebrate all things spooky, and attendees will use their own experiences with being scared to create a frightening story with a happy ending.

COST: Registration for the workshop is $5! When you arrive at the workshop you will receive a ticket, which gets you $5 off Kat Shepherd's and Nikki Loftin's books at BookPeople.

Kat Shepherd is thrilled that her writing debut is a fast-paced series that is likely to engage reluctant readers, because as an educator, she believes that reading should be a joyful experience for every kid. A former classroom teacher, Kat has also spent various points in her life working as a deli waitress, a Hollywood script reader, and a dog trainer for film and TV. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, two dogs, and a rotating series of foster dogs. Babysitting Nightmares is her first middle grade series.

Babysitting isn’t easy, but when things start getting supernatural, it can turn into a real nightmare! Babysitting Nightmares follows the spooky babysitting adventures of a group of seventh grade friends as they take on everything from dirty diapers to angry ghosts. With the help of their mentor, Kawanna, and the old books in her costume shop, the girls work together to solve every new paranormal problem that comes their way. Each eerie new adventure brings them one step closer to facing off with the unearthly force behind it all, the terrifying queen of the Nightmare Realm!

Nikki Loftin lives with her Scottish photographer husband just outside Austin, Texas, surrounded by dogs, chickens, goats, and rambunctious boys. She is the author of the multiply starred-reviewed Nightingale’s Nest and The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy, which Publisher’s Weekly called “mesmerizing” and Kirkus called “irresistible.” Her latest novel, Wish Girl, was published on February 24, 2015, and will be translated into Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and French.

Spooky twists and soaring prose make this foodie update on Hansel and Gretel an unforgettable must-read.

Lorelei is bowled over by Splendid Academy—Principal Trapp encourages the students to run in the hallways, the classrooms are stocked with candy dishes, and the cafeteria serves lavish meals featuring all Lorelei's favorite foods. But the more time she spends at school, the more suspicious she becomes. Why are her classmates growing so chubby? And why do the teachers seem so sinister?

It's up to Lorelei and her new friend Andrew to figure out what secret this supposedly splendid school is hiding. What they discover chills their bones—and might even pick them clean!

Mix one part magic, one part mystery, and just a dash of Grimm, and you've got the recipe for a cozy-creepy read that kids will gobble up like candy.

Thank you for supporting Kat Shepherd, Nikki Loftin, and your local independent bookstore!
