Hezada! I Miss You

In conversation with Owen Egerton

The last Midwestern traveling circus is due to arrive in a rural village it has visited for a century of summers. Like the village, the circus is on its last leg. It’s down to one elephant and a handful of acrobats. The circus boss’s sweetheart is dying. The former starring act is recovering from cancer. The assistant, Frank, plans to retire after this show. Meanwhile, twins Heza and Abe wander the hot fields and roads, waiting for the circus or anything better. Hezada! I Miss You is a novel that explores tradition, love, and suicide—set under the fading tents of small-town America and the circus.

Erin is the author of a novel, Hezada! I Miss You (forthcoming Awst Press, 2020) and two short story collections, The Whole World at Once (West Virginia University Press/Vandalia Press 2017) and The Floating Order (Two Ravens Press, 2009). She has written three chapbooks: "How The Sun Burns Among Hills of Rock and Pebble" (The Head and The Hand Press, Philadelphia/2015); "The Lightning Tree" (Underground Voices, 2015); and "The Wandering House" (Awst Press, Austin/2016). Her work has been five-times nominated for a Pushcart Prize (2007, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018), selected as a Best American Notable Non-Required Reading (2007), shortlisted for the Charles Pick Fellowship (2007), and a finalist for contests such as the Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest and the Kore Press Short Fiction Award (2012). She's a recipient of a Washington State Artist Trust fellowship (2012). Her book The Whole World at Once was selected for performance in L.A.'s New Short Fiction Series.

Owen Egerton is the author of two novels, The Book of Harold and Everyone Says That at the End of the World, and one story collection, How Best to Avoid Dying. He's also the writer/director of the psychological horror film Follow. As a screenwriter, Egerton has written for Fox, Disney, and Warner Brothers. His pieces have appeared in The Huffington Post and Salon. He cowrote the creative writing guide This Word Now with his wife, poet Jodi Egerton. Egerton also hosts NPR's The Write Up.
