Health Care: Meet the American Dream
sponsored by SXSW
ABOUT HEALTH CARE
Health Care: Meet the American Dream is a proposal to redesign the American health care system using the principles of the American Dream: personal accountability, goal setting, and community support.
The global community clamors for American innovation and ideas. But no one wants our health care system.
Americans spend trillions of dollars on health care only to generate some of the worst health outcomes in the world. Addressing health care’s problems with incremental solutions cannot generate the transformational change that’s desperately needed. I offer a visionary alternative—the Dream Plan.
The Dream Plan is a system rooted in the values of the American Dream: personal accountability, longitudinal goal-setting, and community support. The proposal requires a complete decentralization of the current payment system, ostensibly eliminating both health insurance and Medicare while dramatically altering Medicaid.
The Dream Plan elevates the role of preventative care, creates a more market-based economy for health care goods and services, and shifts more accountability for outcomes to the patient. This ambitious plan reminds each of us of our civic duty to be healthy – not only for ourselves, but for the greater American community.
ABOUT JANIS POWERS
Janis Powers is a health care strategy and operations consultant. Over the course of her career, she has served clients all over the country, including the nation’s largest for-profit health system, not-for profit health system, and integrated delivery system. She’s analyzed every major department in a hospital. She is fluent in all aspects of the “continuum of care”—meaning from the point when a patient accesses the health care system all the way through to the when his or her health condition is considered resolved. Her expertise lies in understanding the practical implications of how the health care system functions when factors such as policy changes, economic events, demographic shifts, market competition, and new technology impact the industry.
Although Janis’s career has focused on health care, she is not a clinician. She did not earn degrees in health administration, or social work or public policy. She majored in architecture at Yale and has masters’ degrees in architecture and business from the University of Michigan. Janis has traveled to 40 countries. She is a keen observer of the historical, cultural, environmental, and socio-economic factors that influence how people behave. She combines the “human” aspects of the individual with rigorous data analysis to present innovative and provocative perspectives about health care.
Janis has been widely published in industry journals and a variety of media outlets. Her first article, “A Quantitative Rationale for Investing in Healthcare Facilities” appeared 20 years ago in Healthcare Financial Management. Her first book, Mama’s Got a Brand New Job, is a novel about a power lawyer’s transition to working motherhood. Janis is the proud mother of two wonderful children and resides in Austin, Texas.
