The Texas White House
ABOUT THE TEXAS WHITE HOUSE
A home reflects its occupants. Certainly, Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson's home on the LBJ Ranch, in the Hill Country of Texas, is a perfect reflection of who they were. Described as down to earth, comfortable, not showy, the 8000+ square foot, two story home provided a respite for a political family far away from Washington, D.C. Surrounded by familiar things, mementos, and heirlooms, the Johnsons, their daughters and families and great grandchildren made memories in the ranch house for over fifty years. Russ Whitlock, former superintendent of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park knows the house intimately. He knows and has lost special friends who recounted moments of their time with the 36th president and first lady. Photographs from the 1960's through today share their "heart's home" with the public. These very influential people and the world leaders who visited enjoyed the comfort of uncomplicated furnishings and surroundings. Russ's stories bring the beautifully photographed rooms of the Texas White House back to when they were filled with celebrities and leaders of the 1950's and 1960's.
ABOUT RUSS WHITLOCK
Russ Whitlock spent thirty-seven years with the National Park Service, sharing stories about our national treasures with visitors from around the world. Ten years of his career was devoted to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, where he developed a genuine appreciation for the place the Johnsons called “their heart’s home.” His friendship with the family, neighbors, former advisors, and assistants allowed him to learn about their time spent with the president and Mrs. Johnson at the Texas White House.
