Women of African descent have contributed to America's food culture for centuries, but their rich and varied involvement is still overshadowed by the demeaning stereotype of an illiterate Aunt Jemima. To discover the true role of black women in the creation of American, and especially southern, cuisine, Toni Tipton-Martin has spent years amassing one of the world's largest private collections of cookbooks published by African American authors. Tonight, she’s here, along with our friends from edible Austin, to discuss this important part of America’s culinary history. Hoover's Cooking will offer Chicken & Waffle Bites, Hoe Cake Sausage Wraps and Blackeyed Pea Collard Green Wraps (vegetarian option). Saint Arnold Brewing will offer their seasonal brews. ABOUT TONI TIPTON-MARTIN
Toni Tipton-Martin is a culinary journalist and community activist, a coauthor of A Taste of Heritage: The New African American Cuisine, contributor to Culinaria: The United States, and editor of a new edition of The Blue Grass Cook Book by Minnie C. Fox. Her collection of over 300 African American cookbooks has been exhibited at the James Beard House, and she has twice been invited to the White House to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs to raise a healthier generation of kids. Tipton-Martin is a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Foodways Texas.
