Writers' League of Texas: THIRD THURSDAY PANEL

Thursday, August 20, 2015 - 7:00pm
603 N Lamar Blvd
Austin, TX 78703-5413

Join the Writers' League of Texas on our third floor
for their latest Third Thursday panel!

"Picture This: Creating Illustrated Children's Books"

(Please use the elevator in the back of the store to get to the third floor.)

Green Eggs and Ham, Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are, Snowy Day... the list goes on and on. Classic picture books have been beloved parts of our lives, introducing us to words and concepts, teaching us storytelling, and firing up our imaginations. But what does it take to write one?
Besides pictures, what makes an picture book a picture book? How does it differ in structure and tone? What things does an author need to consider while writing one? And because it is shorter, does that mean it is easier to craft?
Join us Thursday, August 20, to hear the insights and experiences of four different picture book authors. Including...

Jeff Crosby’s latest picture book, The Rockabilly Goats Gruff (Holiday House), was launched March 2014 to great reviews by Kirkus and Booklist. He is also the author and illustrator of Wiener Wolf (Disney-Hyperion 2011), which was selected for the Texas 2 X 2 Book List and the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award. Jeff and his wife, Shelley Ann Jackson, also co-wrote and co-illustrated two award winning nonfiction books for Tundra Books: Little Lions, Bull Baiters, and Hunting Hounds: A History of Dog Breeds (2008) and Harness Horses, Bucking Broncos and Pit Ponies: A History of Horse Breeds (2011).

Liz Garton Scanlon is the author of the highly-acclaimed Caldecott-honored children’s book All the World, illustrated by Marla Frazee, as well her brand new picture book In The Canyon, and her first novel for young readers, The Great Good Summer. Other books include Happy Birthday, Bunny; Think Big, The Good-Pie Party, and more. Ms. Scanlon is also a poet, teacher and a frequent and popular presenter at schools, libraries and conferences. Mary Sullivan is a writer and an illustrator. Her picture book debut, Ball won a Geisel Honor in 2014. Treat, will be out in Spring of 2016. Frankie, a story based on a foster pup (with Austin Pet's Alive) will be out in Spring 2017. All of them published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Currently, she's super pumped about her story Nobody's Duck, and has her fingers crossed that someone will buy it! Her passion is using illustrations to tell stories, using as little text as possible. She spends her days dreaming, drawing, and writing.

Emma J. Virján was born under an Aries moon on a Wednesday, her dad's bowling night. She loves to draw and work in her garden, and she often lets her dog sleep on the couch. She makes her home in Austin, Texas, where she spends her days as an illustrator, author and graphic designer. She is the author-llustrator of What This Story Needs is a Pig in a Wig and the soon-to-be released What This Story Needs is a Hush and Shush (Harper, January 2016). Visit Emma and Pig at
