INDIE NEXT PICK: "Quietly hilarious, this slim novel perfectly encapsulates the absurdity of academia while somehow still honoring the impact that art has on our lives. From the compulsive, repetitive phrases to the judicious reveal of what imploded the protagonists' friendship, Haber has crafted a marvelous and highly enjoyable book. If you have a spare afternoon, spend it reading this in a single sitting like I did." - Madeline

"Geiger was packed with history, mystery, and action. The story twisted and turned so many times in such rapid succession, it gave me literary whiplash. I had no idea what was going to happen, who was in the right, or who the true villain was until the final words of the book. A fun and exciting read for anyone who loves political intrigue!" - Jeanette

"Nghi Vo is a fascinating and prolific fantasy writer, and Siren Queen does not disappoint. In her sophomore novel Vo toes the line between magical realism and fantasy as she presents the story of Luli Wei, a Chinese-American film actress working within the studio system. Wei is headstrong and determined to become a star without succumbing to stereotypes or sacrificing her identity. In a Hollywood populated by actual monsters, it's not an easy task. Siren Queen is an even more overtly queer novel than The Chosen and the Beautiful, but it draws on a similarly lush and mysterious atmosphere." - Chloe

"I've never been to any part of the Sierra mountains, and now it is one of my top hiking destinations. KSR weaves an incredible portrait of a landscape he's clearly been in love with for many years, tying together his experiences as well as the people and scientific oddities that have made this place what John Muir would consider a natural cathedral." - Mattie

"Inspired by the technique of writing "nearby," Zuker crafts incredibly intelligent essays that focus on environmental destruction and harm caused to indigenous peoples' lives in the Amazon. While I not only learned a great deal about some of the tribulations that indigenous communities in the Amazon face, such as monolithic agricultural practices, land snatching schemes, and corrupted politics, I also learned beautiful, carefully articulated details about several indigenous cultures. Overall, the collection struck me as insightful, highly intelligent, and carefully executed." - Madeline
