The inspiring true story of Major Mary Jennings Hegar—a determined and brave woman who gave her all for her country, her gender, and her sense of justice.

On June 29, 2009, Air National Guard Major Mary Jennings Hegar was shot down while on a Medevac mission in Afghanistan. Despite being wounded, her courageous actions would save the lives of her crew and their patients, earning her the Purple Heart as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device.

It would also mark the beginning of a new mission: convincing the U.S. Government to allow women to serve openly on the front line of battle for the first time in American history.

Mary Jennings “MJ” Hegar is a Purple Heart recipient, and the second women ever to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross with the Valor Device attached. She currently lives in Austin with her family and works as an Executive Coach and Consultant. She gives back to her alma mater by mentoring cadets and guest lecturing at the University of Texas. MJ continues writing and speaking about her experiences in the military and her fight for increased military effectiveness through equality.
